Anywhos! Sorry I missed last week’s keke but I was waist deep in prepping for New York Fashion Week. Yes, it was baby’s first fashion week (as a DJ).
I’ve been going to fashion week since it was on cobblestone at Bryant Park (yikes our feets). Back then it was called Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. When I first started in beauty and fashion, I created and managed an online magazine called Iconography. That was my “in” to everything I had dreamed of doing professionally. Despite not finishing college (my son is a whole 28 years old guys), I really knew I could be more than the girl working a good government job. So shortly after my first visit to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I created my beauty and lifestyle blog, Gorgeous In Grey.
I was living in Baltimore with a 917 number so that I could make regular visits to New York and crash industry parties as if I lived there. The Amtrak back then was TWENTY WHOLE AMERICAN DOLLARS.
But after about 6 months that got old. And my itch to move to New York got bigger. So I used both the online magazine and my blog on my resume to get a job as a writer in New York and I slept on couches for the first 8 months. I became the editorial assistant at Hello Beautiful and then eventually become the style and beauty editor (I might write a book just on that experience alone).
I constantly pinch the little girl in me who was born in Chestertown, MD (but I will always firmly stand on being “made” in Baltimore). Mentally, I stay on my Simone Biles ish and do cartwheels and somersaults over the things I’ve been able to accomplish.
Deejaying is no different.
This NYFW season, I got to deejay two major events. Let me tell you how all of this happened.
